Peace and Mission

MATT 10:13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.

The PEACE of the Great Commission is usually central to the Church Growth style of Mission and Evangelism in this age and a  Christian mission is an organized effort to spread Christianity.

Indeed throughout the Christian Mission history we can read of the successes and failures and shortcomings of Mission , and still we believe in the realisation of God’s Word … Matt 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The MISSIO DEI words of Jesus resounded in the Mauritian Church as the zealous mission-focused Charismatic Renewal movement enthused St Paul’s Church Plaine Verte community launched out in local mission when I was Rector there from 1983-2003. The early church in the Book of Acts of the Apostles recalls the numbers as the Holy Spirit anointed the people and were converted . The first mission harvest quantitative record found in Acts 2 : 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

William Carey (17 August 1761 – 9 June 1834) was a British Christian missionary in India , translator, social reformer and cultural anthropologist had an epigram ‘ expect great things from God , attempt great things for God ‘. Carey is known as the father of modern missions and lived in the colonial epoch . Although he achieved a gigantic work in India today’s critics see some negative points in his colonial attitude ..Quote .. ” Carey lacked understanding and respect for Indian culture, writes V. Rao,describing Indian music as “disgusting” and bringing to mind practices dishonorable to God. ” The same attitude was shown by certain Colonial missionaries in Mauritius who found the Mauritian sega unholy and prohibited its practice .

St Mark’s Church at Poudre d’Or was closed for worship for many years and the Church was in ruins with the roof severely damaged by the powerful cyclone . The tropical vegetation had once again encroached the Church and it was in a desolate condition . The missionary thrust was set ablaze to restore and revive the Church when I visited the ruins in 1997 and after consultation with the Bishop Rex Donat and Rev Percy Esser the Northern Region Priest , St Paul’s Church Plaine Verte congregation re-evangelised the dormant ruined parish with renewed Jesus Christ’s PEACE and much prayer .The Mauritian Sega music hymns also elevated the Praise and Worship moments glorifying God  in our  multi-cultural and multi-linguistic  society . Today in 2017 , 20 years after its replanting  , the Golden Powder Church glistens in the Diocese adding fragrance and perfume to the whole community .

2 Cor 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. 15For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

The Clergy Lenten Retreat 2017 was held at St Mark’s Church Poudre d’Or within the village Community .

So Our mission is to join the MISSIO DEI – God’s Mission with PEACE , humility , compassion and love in the power of the Holy Spirit . Nothing more – nothing less .. is required ! The welcoming home or the unwelcoming home all deserve our PEACE that surpasses all understanding  ! The Biblical animal farm await the Shepherd to open the gates and let the sheep , wolves , snakes and doves interact  and His Peace flow  and overflow ..!

MATT 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as wise as snakes and as innocent as doves.
