John 14 26-27
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you. 27Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
Most people want peace except evil masochist people who enjoy suffering or enjoy making others suffer . We live in a global microcosm, or macrocosm family life where we see the various aspects of peace successes or failures . The contemporary bloody Arab Spring, bloody sequels of massive exile and dangerous travel exodus of refugees, is a daily unavoidable international news item . Yet, the Arab Spring movement was initiated with the expectation of democratic peace and justice . But the results are catastrophic causing world turmoil.
International news presently give focus of the Ballistic Missile – ICBM launching dangers from N Korea and the superpower USA President threatening to respond punitively N Korea . It seems a deja-vu , similar to the USA unilateral action against Saddam Hussein of Iraq in 2003 , who had unproven WEAPONS of MASS DESTRUCTION . Iraq underwent a violent DESERT STORM BOMBING and finally with the country in ruins and its infamous leaders ousted and hanged. Historically this is the famous Biblical land of Mesopotamia, land of Patriarch Abraham, father of the Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths. For the Korean Peninsula, soon we will witness the next episode of this ‘ America First motto USA Trumping President ‘ with the supposedly Syndrome of American Dream! Or ..nightmare ..!
Peace – Shalom is our vision – dream quest option in our Global and Local setting . Are there any more excellent options? As Christians we believe in the Peace – Shalom that Jesus Christ leaves with us and that peace incredibly surpasses all understanding . This is achieved and contextualised in our lives by the Dynamic , Proactive and Eclectic Advocate , the Holy Spirit the third person of the Holy Trinity .
Menachem Begin of Israel and Anwar Sadat of Egypt former violent enemies, then Peacemakers won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. The global peaceful world rejoiced over their peaceful political strategic noble achievement. Yet A Sadat was assassinated in 1981 due to the peace treaty . So peace is a noble quest but it is also an extremely dangerous enterprise at times.
Menachem Begin writes : Peace is the beauty of life. It is sunshine. It is the smile of a child, the love of a mother, the joy of a father, the togetherness of a family. It is the advancement of man, the victory of a just cause, the triumph of truth.
Lord Jesus , at this incredible unthinkable event of Easter , may we always live in Your Peace which surpasses all understanding in our broken world . May we be filled with the joy and hope of the resurrection and never lose sight of its truth for our lives.
